Dislocated Total hip replacement

6 July 2022 at 16:14:08

Keep patient fasted, Bloods (FBC, U&Es G+S), COVID swab

Refer to Ortho on-call

Dislocation after hip replacement can result from implant malposition, soft tissue deficiency, trauma or patient non-compliance.

Dislocation of the native hip (i.e. no implant) is rare and usually involve high energy mechanisms and is associated with other injuries to the acetabulum or femoral neck.

Important history to note for prosthetic dislocations include:

  • mechanism of injury

  • number of dislocations (if any)

  • initial hip replacement surgery (date and surgeon)

  • any complication from the initial surgery
