Metacarpal fractures

17 August 2022 at 11:07:34

AP, oblique and True lateral hand x rays (see more for specific treatments)

On-line referral to VFC if no dislocation / subluxation.

Metacarpal fractures are common from falls, direct trauma. Crush injuries can lead to multiple metacarpal fracture.

Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and confirmed on plain radiographs (AP, oblique and True lateral x rays of the hand)

Initial management depends on location of fracture and the amount of displacement. Repeat radiographs (particularly True lateral x ray) is required after manipulation / immobilisation. This is important for determining the need for surgery.
