Soft tissue ankle injury / sprain

Compression bandage, Walking boot (if severe), weight bear as tolerated

No referral needed. Refer to GP/MSK clinic if severe injury or clinical concern

Soft tissue sprains are common, often after a twisting ankle injury.


Ottawa rules

This can be used to decide whether x-ray is required


Simple soft tissue injuries without fracture can be managed non-operatively with symptom relief.


A&E management

  • elevation, rest, ice, compression, analgesia

  • walking boot (+/- crutches) can be offered for temporary pain relief

  • No referral to VFC is needed.

  • Refer to GP/MSK clinic if severe injury or clinical concern.
